Krum High School English teacher Melinda Buchanan was recently awarded a $500 grant to purchase novels for her classroom. Her first order of books arrived on Thursday, Sept. 28, and she compared its arrival to Christmas, noting that all her students found a book they were interested in reading.
Buchanan applied for a Book Love Foundation grant over the summer and was notified in August that she was one of four grant recipients. To apply for the grant, Buchanan wrote an essay detailing how she motivates students to read in the classroom. In her essay, she noted that educators must have a passion for teaching and sharing books as well as a respect for students and their interests.“Kids who aren’t readers need individual, intentional conversations and intentional support to develop into lifelong readers,” she wrote. “But mostly, they need good books.”
