Early in December, the third-grade Safety Patrol team at Hattie Dyer Elementary decided they wanted to do something for their community. They knew that some children in the Krum community were less fortunate than they, and they set out to make a difference in their Christmas by launching a toy drive. Once word spread, several local businesses said they wanted to help. C & G Electric, Ferguson Electric, Krum Clips Salon, Krum Dental Associates, Krum Veterinary Hospital, Spencer’s Automotive Repair, and Tudy’s Tacos all reached out to Dyer Elementary asking how they could help- and they delivered. “They have done most of the legwork,” says Hattie Dyer Elementary Principal Lindsey Boone, “they believed in our mission and had a desire to support our young leaders who wanted to make this drive for our local children happen.”
On Monday, December 17, these local businesses showed up at Dyer with trucks full of toys for girls and boys alike in Krum. The Safety Patrol helped unload over 400 toys into their school that afternoon. Thanks to these businesses, the drive has been more successful than Mrs. Boone could have ever imagined. “Our plan for the toys has changed a bit, for the better!” she says. After ensuring that the Angel Trees at all three Krum ISD elementary campuses are taken care of, Mrs. Boone and Dyer Elementary Counselor Nadalee Daves are going to reach out to local churches. “Oftentimes, parents won’t take advantage of our offers for assistance,” says Boone, “but they will reach out to churches”. Once all needs they know of are met, the remaining toys will be assessed and a secret porch drop will take place if possible. With so many families not wanting to reach out for help in order to hold on to their pride, a secret porch drop will enable the toy drive to support them this holiday season.
Krum ISD would like to thank the Third Grade Safety Patrol, teachers, and staff at Hattie Dyer Elementary, C & G Electric, Ferguson Electric, Krum Clips Salon, Krum Dental Associates, Krum Veterinary Hospital, Spencer’s Automotive Repair, Tudy’s Tacos, and the entire Krum community for their compassion and support in bringing this idea to such successful fruition.
