Credit By Exam

1. The student must be enrolled in Krum ISD
2. The District shall administer each exam not fewer than four times each year as required under the Texas Education Code, 28.023, to students in grades 1 through 12. The dates will be on the KISD testing calendar and will be made public on the school district website.
3. The district will develop procedures for kindergarten acceleration required under Texas Education Code 28.023 for students entering kindergarten.
4. Krum ISD will not charge for an exam for acceleration. The district may administer and recognize results of a test from Texas Tech University or The University of Texas at Austin.
5. Krum ISD may develop its own tests or purchase examinations that thoroughly test the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills in the applicable grade level or subject area.
6. The parent or guardian must request testing in writing to the school the student attends. The parent can find the form in the counselor’s office or on the district website.

In accordance with the State Board rules, the Board shall approve procedures developed by the Superintendent or designee to allow a child who is five years old at the beginning of the school year to be assigned initially to grade 1 rather than kindergarten. Criteria for acceleration may include:

1. Scores on readiness tests or achievement tests that may be administered by appropriate District personnel.
2. Recommendation of the kindergarten or preschool the student has attended.
3. Chronological age and observed social and emotional development of the student.
4. Other criteria deemed appropriate by the principal and Superintendent.

1. A student enrolled in any of grades 1 through 5 must be accelerated one grade if he/she meets the following requirements:
2. The student scores at least an 80% on a criterion-referenced test for the grade level he/she wants to skip in each of the following areas:
   1. Language
   2. Arts
   3. Mathematics
   4. Science and
   5. Social Studies
3. A school district representative recommends that the student be accelerated.
4. The student’s parent or guardian gives written approval for the acceleration.

1. A student in any of grades 6 through 12 must be given credit for an academic subject if the student scores at least an 80% on a criterion-referenced test for the applicable course. In a course tested by semesters, this requires scoring an 80% on each semester exam to gain credit for the course.
2. A student taking a CLEP (College Level Examination Program) test must make a scale score of 50 or higher to gain credit according to SB453.
3. A student taking an AP (Advanced Placement) examination must score a 3 or higher to gain credit for the course.
4. If a student is given credit in a subject on the basis of an examination without prior instruction, the school district must enter the examination score on the student’s transcript. In order to meet graduation requirements under HB5, the student must also meet the substitute assessment standards according to 19 TAC §101.4002(b). The Substitute Assessment Chart is attached. A student who has not had prior instruction cannot take EOC because they have not been enrolled in the course.
5. A student who has had prior instruction and is seeking credit for a course also has the ability to also take the EOC exam to meet the requirements of the state.
6. If a student fails to earn credit by examination for a specific high school course before the beginning of the school year in which the student would normally be required to enroll in that course in accordance with the school district’s prescribed course sequence, the student must satisfactorily complete the course to receive credit along with any state required EOC testing.
7. A student may only take each test once during the testing window and has a limitation of testing twice per course or grade level.

1. The results of the examination will placed in and/or recorded on the permanent school record (cumulative folder) or academic achievement record.
2. No grade points will be awarded for credit earned through credit be examination and will not be used in determining class rank.
