Krum ISD Establishes Special Education Program

Krum Independent School District has been a member of the Denton County Special Education Co‑op since its establishment in 1972. The Co‑op was created by several smaller area districts to pool resources and provide special education services that individual districts could not sustain financially. Participating districts currently include Ponder ISD, Pilot Point ISD, Sanger ISD, and Krum ISD.

Due to recent population growth experienced in all the participating districts, each district is now positioned to support their own in‑district special education program. “I am excited to share this important update with our Krum ISD families,” said Dr. Jason Cochran, Superintendent, Krum ISD. “Collectively, the partnering school districts have made the decision to dissolve the Denton County Special Education Co‑op in June 2026, allowing each district time to develop its own in‑house special education department to best meet the needs of its students.”

Approximately 550 Krum students currently receive special education services. Transitioning these services to the district will improve accessibility and convenience for students and families.

Despite the organizational change, Krum ISD’s core mission remains unchanged: to provide high‑quality support and services for students. In the coming weeks, the district will begin staffing for the 2026-2027 school year.  Funds previously contributed to the Co‑op will remain in the district to support local programs and services.

The district is also pleased to announce the appointment of Tracy Walls as Krum ISD’s Director of Special Education. Walls brings substantial experience in the field, and we are confident she will provide strong leadership as the new department is established.

Krum ISD is optimistic about this next chapter for the district and grateful for the continued support of the community.
