The topic of bullying has made recent headlines as tragic events and calls to action by several celebrities have brought the important issue into the national spotlight. Bullying is a problem that affects students every day. It is a growing concern across the nation and Krum ISD campus and district administrators are working together to provide a safe and orderly learning environment for our students.

What is Bullying?

Bullying occurs when a student or group of students engages in written or verbal expression or physical conduct that is meant to have the effect of physically harming a student, damaging a student’s property, or placing a student in reasonable fear of harm. Bullying actions or threats are severe, persistent, or pervasive and create an intimidating, threatening, or abusive educational environment for a student.

Bullying can include hazing, threats, taunting, confinement, assault, demands for money, destruction of property, theft of valued possessions, name-calling, rumor spreading, and ostracism.

What is the difference between teasing and bullying?

Teasing occurs mutually between two people. When students tease one another, there is a "back and forth" nature to the conduct. Bullying is different in that it occurs when one person has power over the other or is trying to gain power through verbal or physical actions, threats, or abuse. It is also important to realize the difference between tattling and telling. Tattling happens when one student is intentionally trying to get another student in trouble for something that they did. Telling is completely different and involves going to an adult and informing them of any dangerous, destructive, or threatening behavior.
